Why take the west coast route home?

Because it completes the loop without repeating the road you came north on. Instead of heading back down State Highway 1 through Whangārei, you travel along the edge of the Kaipara Harbour, one of the largest harbours in the Southern Hemisphere, through farming country and small settlements, with a superb museum and hot pools to finish the trip.

Matakohe and the kauri museum

In the small village of Matakohe, the kauri museum tells the story of the kauri forests and the people who felled them and dug for gum, with huge slabs of kauri timber, a collection of kauri gum, recreated pioneer buildings and machinery. It is one of the best regional museums in New Zealand, and well worth two or three hours.

Helensville and Parakai

If you take State Highway 16 from Wellsford, the road follows the southern Kaipara to Helensville, a historic river town, and neighbouring Parakai, where geothermal hot pools are a wonderful way to soak away the miles.

Muriwai

A short detour from State Highway 16 leads to Muriwai, a wild black-sand surf beach west of Auckland. From the clifftop viewing platforms, you can watch thousands of gannets nesting on the rocks and stacks just offshore. Swim only between the flags, as the surf here is powerful.

Which route back to Auckland should you take?

  • State Highway 12 and State Highway 1: from Matakohe, join State Highway 1 at Brynderwyn and return through Wellsford, Warkworth and the Hibiscus Coast. It is the quicker route, but repeats the road you came north on.
  • State Highway 16: from Wellsford, head south-west through Kaukapakapa to Helensville and Parakai, then on to Auckland’s north-west. It is slower but quieter, with the hot pools and Muriwai on the way.

Is the kauri museum at Matakohe easy to reach in an RV?

Yes. Matakohe is on State Highway 12, the main road between Dargaville and State Highway 1, and the museum has a car park suitable for campervans and motorhomes. There is also accommodation and camping in the village, so you can stay nearby and spend the morning in the museum.

Where can you stay overnight?

  • Matakohe, with camping close to the museum.
  • Parakai, with holiday parks beside the hot pools.
  • Muriwai, with a regional park campground near the beach.
  • Around the Kaipara, with small campgrounds in harbour settlements.
  • Self-contained freedom camping is limited and only for certified self-contained vehicles where the Kaipara district council or Auckland Council permits it. See our Northland freedom camping guide.

Your last night is best within an hour or two of the depot. See our guide to returning to Auckland.

What should you know about the Kaipara?

The Kaipara Harbour is enormous and tidal, with mudflats, mangroves and shifting channels. The Pouto Peninsula, at its northern entrance, is reached by long unsealed roads and beach routes that rental agreements commonly exclude; see our guide to unsealed roads and Ninety Mile Beach.
