Auckland Car Rental for the Bay of Islands: Airport and City Pickups
Quick summary: Auckland has the widest choice of rental cars in New Zealand, and the drive north to Paihia, around 230 km, is a road trip in its own right. You can collect at Auckland Airport’s international or domestic terminal, or at a downtown depot after a few days in the city. Airport or downtown?
| Pickup | Best for |
|---|---|
| International terminal | Long-haul arrivals heading north the next morning |
| Domestic terminal | Flights from other New Zealand cities |
| Downtown depot | Starting after a few days in central Auckland |
The airport is on the city’s southern side, so driving north means crossing the whole city. If you’re staying downtown first, a city depot can save that journey.

How do you get north out of Auckland?
Either over the Harbour Bridge on State Highway 1, or around the western ring route via State Highway 16 and 18, which avoids the central city. North of the city, the motorway continues past Ōrewa and through the tunnels towards Warkworth. See driving north out of Auckland.
Where can you stop on the way?
Warkworth and nearby Matakana for food and wine, Waipu for its Scottish heritage, and Whangārei for the falls and a coffee by the town basin. See Auckland to Whangārei.
Should you drive straight after a long-haul flight?
It’s safer not to. Three hours or more on unfamiliar roads, on the left, after an overnight flight is tiring. Spend a night in Auckland and set off the next morning, or take a short connecting flight to Kerikeri instead.

How do you return the car in Auckland?
Allow plenty of time for traffic on the way back into the city, especially on Sunday afternoons. Refuel before you reach the airport, and check which terminal your rental company uses. See returning to Auckland.
